Center of field: Objective, control the palace.
Here are detail pictures of the battlefield:
Deployment
Diagonally opposed deployment.
I loaded up between the power generator, exhaust fan, and the building with a Hellbrute and Chaos Space Marines (Chosen). In the corner of the building I set up the long-range cultists, and set the shorter-range/hand-weapon guys in the break in the building. Lots of problems to come.
The Battle
The game starts. This is where the problems begin for me. The vehicles swing out for shots on the Chosen & Hellbrute. The shooty Eldar troops shuffle along the 2nd level of the palace.
Nothing much from the shooting round, everything missed or was resisted. I moved the one group of cultists forward between the wall and the pillars. The Hellbrute moves up behind the far wall along with the Chosen. The cultists are terrible shots.
With the Eldar in place, they begin raining hot death onto my cultists. The empty carrier vehicle made a disabling shot on the Hellbrute, rendering him immobile. Two Chosen die, and shamefully the survivors turned tail to run.
So now, the bulk of the one Cultists unit is dead (but not running away). The other cultists regrouped just out of range of the Eldar on the 2nd floor. The Chosen gather their wits back and get back together. I don’t think any Eldar have died yet at this point. The Hellbrute managed to get a shot off at the vehicles, but was effectively worthless for the game.
I was able to take out a few of the Eldar, but it was ultimately at this point I realized that I couldn’t get close enough to those shooty bastards to be able to do any real damage. My Chosen were shaken, the cultists were half wiped out, the Hellbrute disabled. Chaos knows when it’s better to retreat to redouble its efforts on another day. The Eldar may have won the battle…
