Descent: Manticore

I’ve had this figure primed to paint for… ages. Two years maybe? Between painting other models and not painting at all, he’s just been sitting on the “under construction” shelf. Waiting. He waits no longer! Now he is prepared to confront an unwary or unwitting set of adventurers! I’m definitely not unhappy with the fade from brown to red in his scorpion tail! It came out as well as could be expected and looks how I intended it to (for the most part) — In fact, I’m overall quite pleased with the paint job on this figure. It’s finally starting to feel like my paintingRead More →

Descent: Minotaur

Way back, when I first started painting I took a small detour from the Games Workshop Dwarfs and started painting some miniatures from the 1st edition version of Descent: Journeys in the Dark. This was mostly to take a break from the monotony of continually painting the gold and metal bits of the Dwarf models. I wasn’t terribly sophisticated in my painting techniques since, at the time, I really only had maybe a dozen fully painted models under my belt at the time. But having said that, I was always very happy with how this model turned out and it was one of the reasonsRead More →

Descent: Lyssa

I think I painted Lyssa toward the end of my initial painting of Descent figures. She’s got layered skintones, leather, and cloth. While I didn’t even attempt facial details on her, it looks like I was just starting to get better. This may have even been right after I got more than one brush size, but I can’t recall… Finally, here is her character card. Thank goodness this embarrassing series is finally over!Read More →

Descent: Sir Valadir

This one’s rough. Sir Valadir has a face only a mother or Great Old One could love… If I recall correctly, I tried a couple times before ultimately giving up on the face. Still single brush, still just barely starting with layering. Bad times. Here’s his character card… Y’know, it’s still a goofy grin…Read More →

Descent: Grey Ker

Grey Ker is a rogue who keeps a grappling hook handy because he’s always up for a good climb… If I remember correctly, this is one of the early models on which I used a wash (as is evidenced by his smudgy cloak). At the time, I was super proud of how cleanly I was able to pick out the potion bottles on his belt. Considering the size of the model and the brush I was using, I’m actually still kind of impressed I was able to pick them out without much slopping of paint! This dude currently represents the character of my friend @asbivRead More →

Descent: Runewitch Astarra

I’m not sure whether the Runewitch Astarra is a Wizard, Sorceress, or a Warlock — But she activates magical glyphs as she gets near to them, so I’d lean toward Sorceress. This one looks better than some of the others, but… Still single-brush, still no eyes, still no wash, still only doing “layering” on the large areas. But I did attempt some fanciness by free-handing the runes/carvings on her staff! And here’s her character portrait!Read More →

Descent: Landrec the Wise

This is one of the later Descent heroes I painted, and one of the first ones with which I was kinda happy. I still wasn’t using washes, but I did start to use multiple layers of colors (on skin & cloth, not other areas yet), which is really evident here on his cloak. Still not really happy with the details on this, but it really was a combination of my inexperience and the lack of / muddled details of the model itself. And here is the character card for Landrec the Wise!Read More →

Descent: Silhouette

Here’s another single-brush, early-hobby paint job. I initially had some old-school mini-painting book, and one of the old styles of doing “shadows” before washes were really popular was to prime the mini in black, and then paint… but not the WHOLE way into the seams, leaving the primer as the shadow. It’s a kind of comic-book outline-looking style when done well (and looks like junk when done poorly, like this one is). I didn’t do much in the way of layers, and there’s no washing, no highlights, no basing, no eyes… Woof, it was a rough time for my painting career. And here’s how sheRead More →

Descent: Andira Runehand

Here we have one of my worst-painted models. Granted, this is one of my early paint jobs. I had many less paints, didn’t yet know the magic of washes, and had only one brush – the Citadel Starter Brush. Looking at it, I don’t think I even primed this model before painting it. Add to all of this the fact that the model is a smaller-scale (20mm, I think) and the details, particularly the facial details, are not at all sharp and you get this hot mess. Needless to say, I’m not proud of this model. But my feed has caught up with my currently painted models, and I’veRead More →

Descent: Naga #1

The Naga, monsters born of magic, are very large snake-like creatures with human-like faces. Ten to twenty feet in length and intelligent, they can be formidable opponents! This model is from the Tabletop Dungeon-Crawl game Descent: Journeys in the Dark (1st Edition). My first copy of the game was awesome, and I had a lot of the models painted, but it (and all of the painted models) disappeared with my ex-girlfriend back in the day. When I purchased a second copy of the game, unfortunately one of the game boards was repeated and another of the game boards was missing. So I pulled all ofRead More →
