I painted this Reaper Bones Anhkheg (as it was originally spelled) in the style of the first appearance, illustrated by Erol Otus in the March 1977 Dragon Magazine (Issue #5!)
I did a modicum of mould-line cleanup and the barest of basing on this model, as I slowly step back into consistently working on my hobby! I’m happy with the paint job (barring a couple small areas where, on review, I see some mistakes), and I finally feel like I’m getting “the touch” back.
When I started the Anhkheg, I was a little concerned about the color scheme. I knew I wanted to paint it as it is originally described in the 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual, but I was having trouble visualizing the “brown with a pink underbelly” being described… It’s a long way from what it looks like in the package…
So I was worried about the color scheme until I found the original illustration and used it for reference. I feel like it came out pretty close, and I’m happy with it! Excited to use this in a game. Someday, anyway. Here’s the original Erol Otus illustration:
